Art By Numbers is a band that I just recently heard about from a few friends so I decided to give their recently released album a listen, and I'm quite glad that I did. I'd describe the album as a progressive alternative rock album, but genre labels aren't really my thing. The record is very upbeat for the most part and it has a lot of elements that make it stand out from a lot of other music out there right now.
I'll start by talking about the superb guitar work on here. There are very well done sweeps spread all over the album along with good riffs and clean sounding sections all over, and none of it sounds out of place. These guitarists also know how to make a solo that has shred in them, while not being so complex as to overwhelm or bore the listener. The only problem I really had with the guitar work throughout the album was that sometimes it seems like the music is specifically focused on the guitars and that they stand out too much and have just a bit too much time with lead riffs and licks.
Going back to the clean sections I was talking about, there is a lot of piano and more classical instruments in this album, which is not a bad thing at all. These instruments add a different feel to the album and this band knows how to make them work and not sound out of place at all.
Really, the only gripe I have with this album is the singing. It's just a different style than a lot of rock, and I don't really like it that much. Some people may love it, but it just wasn't for me.
This album has a lot of talent showcased throughout its 35 minutes, and it's pretty entertaining for the whole length. If you're into prog-rock then this album is a definite must have and I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.
